Why Hydration Matters (Even When It’s Cold!)

When winter rolls in, it’s easy to forget about hydration. You’re probably swapping that nice cold ice water for warm hot chocy and perhaps Starbuck’s most seasonal drinks and craving a cozy blanket more than your water bottle. You’re not alone! As the temperature drops, so does our natural thirst response. We just don’t feel as thirsty when we’re not sweating buckets in the summer heat. Hydration is just as important in the winter though, if not more.

Staying hydrated keeps your energy up, supports your immune system, and helps your body regulate temperature (yes, even when it’s cold!). Plus, water plays a huge role in muscle recovery and joint health, which is a big deal if you’re crushing your Polar Power Challenge workouts 💪

So, how do you stay on top of hydration when cozying up with a hot chocolate feels way more appealing than chugging cold water? Here are a few ideas to make it easier:

  1. Start your morning strong  Drink a big glass of water when you wake up. It’s a small habit that sets the tone for your day. I started doing this last year and it’s shown beneficial in many ways.
  2. Keep it warm Swap cold water for herbal teas or warm water with lemon. They’ll hydrate you and keep you toasty. Swap out the sugar drinks for something as good but made with Stevia instead. Playing Starbucks at home saves the sugar, and gives that feeling of doing something special without building another gingerbread house.
  3. Infuse some fun Add slices of citrus, berries, or herbs like mint to your water for a little flavour boost.
  4. Make it visual Use a fun water bottle or one with time markers. Seeing your progress is a great motivator!

As we tackle the remaining of Week 3 of the Polar Power Challenge, let’s make hydration a priority. Whether it’s your first sip in the morning or a cup of tea after your workout, every little bit helps.

Cheers (with water, of course!)💧
