Completing the Hyrox competition was one of the toughest physical challenges I’ve ever faced. Even as part of a relay team, the intensity was next level.. even more next level than my Festivus competition earlier this year. I pushed my endurance and strength to new heights (that I didn’t even know I had). What stood out the most for me, though, was the running. Surprisingly, I ran nearly the entire time (1.5km slow and steady bursts), only walking for about 10 seconds when I stopped to talk to someone walking. Knowing that I could push through when it got tough made me so proud of myself, and I gave it everything I had.
Throughout the competition, my mind kept returning to a moment from my teenage years when someone told me I’d end up at the Exhibition Place as “the Fattest Woman in the World.” To be running at that same place now, competing in a high-level fitness event, felt like a full-circle moment. When I didn’t feel like I fit in, I thought about the days when I struggled to walk for more than 2-3 minutes at a time. The contrast between where I was then and where I am now kept me going when I wanted to slow down.
Hyrox demanded everything I had, but I proved to myself how far I’ve come. This experience has fuelled my desire to continue growing, and I’m already looking forward to competing in doubles at Hyrox next year.
