Summer is often seen as a time of relaxation, vacations, and fun in the sun. However, for many, this season can also bring about a significant disruption to our daily routines. Whether you’re a parent, a teacher, a business owner, someone who works at the office, or someone who works from home.. maintaining a consistent schedule during the summer months can be challenging. At The Transformation Station, we’ve noticed this struggle (you are definitely not alone in this) and want to offer some tips to help you stay on track.

Summer can bring about a more relaxed work environment or an even a more chaotic one too. It can also mean juggling different schedules, especially if you’re taking time off or adjusting to a summer work plan. With vacations and outdoor activities, or if you’re a gym owner like myself- adding in extra creativity hours to offset the summer lull, sticking to a regular gym schedule or workout routine can become challenging. It’s easy to skip a workout when the beach is calling, when you’re away from home, or you’re glued to the computer screen taking care of business. And then there’s the summer BBQs, parties, and travel which often lead to eating out more and indulging in foods that you might usually avoid because they affect your overall health and fitness goals.
The summer has many distractions that can throw even the most disciplined person off their game. School is out, which can mean that you’re off work, or maybe kids are home, vacations are planned, and the general attitude is more laid-back. This can lead to irregular sleep patterns, as longer days and warmer nights often result in staying up later and waking up at different times and this irregularity can affect your energy levels and motivation.
To help offset these challenges and maintain some consistency of routine during the summer, it’s important to prioritize sleep. Establish a consistent bedtime and wake-up time, even on weekends, and create a calming pre-sleep routine to help signal to your body that it’s time to wind down. I know this can be challenging, it’s something I have put a lot of effort in myself, so remember to give yourself some grace too in this area. Do your best!
Scheduling your workouts as you would any other important appointment can also help. Be flexible with the type and timing of your workouts. If you can’t make it to the gym, opt for a quick home workout or an outdoor activity. We have a socials tab on our app too that you can be supported with as a member of TTS by posting these outside the gym workouts. It’s something a lot of people are struggling with so sharing the process goes a long way 🙂 You can also incorporate movement into your vacation plans by hiking, swimming, or even taking walking tours to stay active while enjoying your time off. Packing portable workout gear like resistance bands or a jump rope can make this easier.
Enjoy summer treats in moderation and balance, what I call- ‘extracurricular meals’ with healthier choices. Keep healthy snacks available to avoid the continual temptation of less nutritious options.
You can also adjust your goals to reflect the summer season and there is no shame in this. If maintaining your usual routine isn’t feasible, focus on staying active and making healthy choices where you can, celebrating small victories and progress, even if it doesn’t look exactly like your typical routine. Keep your gym membership so you can get into the gym when you can, without that feeling of cutting it off completely.
Summer is a time to enjoy and make memories. Being too rigid with your routine can add unnecessary stress. Embrace flexibility and, like I say.. give yourself some grace. Sometimes, the best memories are made when you allow yourself to go with the flow and enjoy the moment. We train in the gym to enjoy the important things in life, and so they become more easier for us because of our strength and mobility.
At The Transformation Station, we understand the importance of a balanced routine, even during the unpredictable months. Whether it’s summer, winter, fall, or spring. We’re here to support you with flexible class schedules, outdoor workout options, and a community that understands the challenges you face.
